Who's to say I ever had one?

The first thing Serenity heard was the raspy breathing, and then the rough, distorted voice of the boy next to her. A thought popped into her head before she turned to look at her neighbor. She couldn’t see his face clearly since he was wearing a hood, but she did notice that he appeared to be wearing some sort of mask. That only served to fuel the first thought that ran through the Lyra's head.

Yes, the first thing that had popped into her mind was that the boy had been attempting to copy Star Wars. She had absolutely adored those movies when she had been younger, and it had only grown stronger as she grew older. She had been exposed to so much Sci-Fi that the Aussie could practically recite her favorite shows. Serenity wasn’t ashamed to admit that she was a geek. It was then that the words the boy had spoken sank into the Lyra’s mind. Her face lit up almost immediately and she beamed at the person next to her.

An electro-magnetic pulse grenade was capable of electrocuting or – more lamely – stunning life forms caught in the blast. Its detonation resulted in a shell of disruptive electrical energy that damaged and disabled electronic systems, however, its effectiveness diminished with the distance from the blast area. It was gave essentially the same result as an EMP launcher, but in Serenity’s opinion EMP grenades were cooler because they were carried on your person. Much easier to access in times of need. If they were studying that, this would be the best class ever. Serenity knew if they were learning about those things, that she would actually be able to keep herself awake without causing harm to herself, or her dignity.

“That would be a corker of a class it would!” she said, raising her voice to a somewhat audible level.

She thought maybe he hadn't heard her; after all she had spoken somewhat quietly, so she turned her head away from the lousy compass and towards him. Looking the boy dead on, Serenity finally caught a glimpse of what it was that he was wearing. It wasn’t just a mask, it was a gas mask. The Aussie cocked her head to the side, immediately wondering why he was wearing one. Of course that’s when a second thought became much more possible than the first. The gasmask reminded her of one thing and one thing only: Are you my mummy?

The epic quote from her favorite television show ran through her mind. The gasmask child had been one affected by a nanogene cloud. In the end of course they managed to revert the child back and all was well for the time being. Honestly, the shows kind of ruined this whole “magic” idea for Serenity. The Lyra knew the actions weren’t real, but if they could make it seem like it was what was stopping them from doing the same here? So as cool as it was, for all she knew all of this was some kind of special effects stuff that made it appear as though they were performing magic. Even so, the thirteen year old found it fun to pretend that it was real.

"Sorry, have we met before?”

“Uh-uh-uhm… no we haven’t.” Serenity said, finding herself stumbling quietly over her own words as her she tried to collect her scrambled thoughts. "I, er... just transferred.” Could she be any more awkward about it? “I’m Serenity Locke.”
