When will the poles switch again, I wonder?

Sometimes, Aukley really, really missed normal people, especially when she looked at Professor Rosse's outfits, and today's had her facepalming. His fishy cloak reminded her of the shower curtain that used to hang in the bathroom at home, before Horatio declared he was too old to need themed stuff and went on strike, using the bushes in the shared yard instead for a couple of weeks until their mothers were disgusted enough to paint over the fish all around the walls. Aukley didn't actually remember witnessing all this - she had been very young at the time - but her Mom liked retelling the story and showing her pictures of the bathroom when it was fishy.

At least the lesson was interesting enough to distract her. Magnets were awesome, in Aukley's opinion, and she'd always loved playing with them. The whole Earth's-Magnetic-Field thing confused her, though, because if the earth had a definite north then shouldn't everything on Earth automatically be magnetized to match? In which case, she shouldn't be able to magnetize hair pins and needles. Giving up on her ponderings for the moment, but making a mental note to ask her Mom in their next letter, Aukley went to grab all of the things she would need. She didn't even want to try a Hover Charm, so she grabbed a water dish along with her magnet and needle.

She had done this kind of thing before, and didn't have any trouble until after the needle was magnetized and placed on the water. "Erm. Which way's north, again?" She asked a nearby student, a little embarrassed that she didn't know. Of course, if she could see the sun's position and know what time of day it would be easy to find north in the wild with this kind of thing, but for now she was a bit confused.
