In spite of what most other people thought (her Papa, Roydon, the Aquila seeker, she was sure even at times, Reece) Charline wasn’t an idiot. She was perfectly aware of what game her new acquaintance was playing. I’ll damage her pride, challenge her and then she’ll just have to do as I want. This tactic she had fallen victim to before. Never again though would she make that mistake. The only person who mattered, the only person she had to prove herself to, the only person whose every word she hung onto was her Papa’s. This pathetic child did not deserve to best her. There was no way she would surrender and let the first year win.

Inching forwards the Lyra began to whisper,“I don’t know who you think you are but you can’t treat me like that. I won’t be easily fooled.”

Part of her knew that in reality, though she believed in the words she was speaking, it was a cover. Like a scared child she was hiding behind this image. Her true vulnerability could not be displayed. There was no way she could demonstrate the spell. She did not even know what the spell was.

However, she was soon consoled by the thought that had she been paying attention and had she actually cared about classes these days, Charline would have perfected the spell by now. She was an exceptionally talented witch.

Too bad all that talent would be wasted. The world had no real use for Charline Adler but did this girl know that? Even if she did, had she the right to judge her because of it? No, of course not.

Still appearing slightly menacing she continued to tell the girl,”I do not need to prove myself to you. This is your problem so you sort it. I know I can perform magic just fine, the question is, can you?” Turning away from the girl she rested her head on her arms and resumed her previous activity staring vacantly at the wall. What a silly naive little girl.

By now Emma had no doubt whatsoever that this girl was nothing more than a conceited, prejudiced… pufferfish , as her mother would call people who thought themselves far above the rest of the world.... more
