Samuel was by a nature an observant individual, and the fact that he was currently paying attention -- more so than he actually did to other people -- to Brair, he saw the slight narrowing of her eyes, probably directed at him. He blinked in confusion at that. He didn’t understand what in the name of Merlin was happening with this girl, and he was more interested because of that. One second she seemed interested and the next she wasn’t. Women were too complicated, but Samuel liked trying to understand them. He wasn’t like that with everyone woman with a pair of good legs. No, he was very picky when it came to them. They had to have something in order for him to pursue them. In fact, he had never had any serious girlfriends. He didn’t see the need to get serious with someone when he knew that his parents would eventually choose for him. He just hoped that the future Mrs. Thomas was good looking and with an ounce of spark to interest him. The freshman wasn’t particularly keen on having a boring wife. Who would be?
He cracked his neck and waited for her answer. Nothing could have prepared him from what she said. He took a step back and silently looked at her more closely. He was thinking over what she had said and asked in return. She had been a Ravenclaw a year above him and she had asked if he had a girlfriend. Merlin! This was so confusing. He didn’t know what to say to either thing. His brain was battling out what to respond. Part of him wanted to go down the road that she had paved with that amazingly beautiful smile, but the other was screaming at him that she hadn’t been a Ravenclaw, because he would have remembered her. After all, he had a photographic memory. The former squashed the latter.
Samuel laughed at her question, “Well, depends. She wasn’t a girlfriend per se, but we didn’t end whatever we had. Seanna was complicated.” There had been a few girls he had casually dated after fifth year, but none had been anything serious. He could think about her supposedly Ravenclaw membership another time, or maybe he hadn’t seen her before because he hadn’t been paying attention. Unlikely, but possible. “Why? You interested?” he returned her flirtatious smile.
