I agree that there is a significant difference in children’s reading abilities when they enter first grade. I also find that most of my students- not all but most- come from homes that have illiterate parents. I do think that parental involvement and the quality of the support that the child receives at home is a big contributor to a child’s early reading success. I just wonder how we can help offer support/assistance to those parents- if they’re not too embarrassed- to read and write.
