MaryBeth,

For my group, they were really interested in animals, so I focused on animal books. I started out with non fiction books at first and then added some fiction fun books at the end. I did not use graphic novels, although I think if I could continue this activity and I could find some on their level, I would introduce them to graphic novels. I think it would be interesting to see their response to graphic novels to see if they think it is overwhelming with all the text on the page, or if it would spark their interst and pull themselves through reading it because they are interested in reading it. Attitude can play a big a part of whether or not we succeed.

  • Boys' Reading Interest presentation response - MaryBeth , Sat Nov 19 14:21
First, what a cool looking presentation. I loved the bright colors that you used, the student work samples, and the pictures that were incorporated. I have particular interest in boys, since I have 2 ... more

Thanks for the comment on the presentation! It seemed like it took forever to make :-) All the pictures of the kids except for one are from our classes. The boys really had a great time in our clubs. ... more

I have found this year's boys love them!

I love the idea about using the comic strips after reading a book and creating a graphic novel! Boys are especially interested in these books and they can be a useful tool!

I couldn't agree more. I think graphic novels are wonderful for male students. When I taught the upper grades a few years ago, graphic novels changed my males students perspective on reading... more

Not only are they great for boys and younger students but also for adults. I read my first ever graphic novel this past semester and I enjoyed it so much. I had never been able to read books like... more

I really don't understand how I had never heard of graphic novels until Dr. Moorman's class! Where have I been?

It sound like the books about immigration were a great theme. It's always good to be able to work on other academic areas (such as Social Studies) while you are working on reading too. About graphic... more

Are you taking the course with Dr. Moorman? If so, I am also in that course now and we also did a unit on graphic novels- sounds similar to what you are doing in class too?
          • graphic novels - MaryBeth, Mon Nov 21 14:08
Yep! I'm taking that class. 5 years ago when I was teaching you rarely heard of them. I'm thinking of starting to write them myself! Ha! In all seriousness, it does seem like they have become really... more

Since working with graphic novels in Moorman's class I have noticed them everywhere- they are SO popular now! When I was little I remember the classic comic book style and being turned off by them... more

I agree Ruth Ann. I was NOT a comic book fan as a youngster, so I guess I was a little surprised to hear in Moorman's class about how popular they were. It seems like there are much more varied in... more

I am in Dr. Moorman's class too, and as I was doing that graphic novel project I came across two wonderful graphic novels about Ann Frank. They contained lots of history - it really surprised me how... more

I, too, was not a fan of graphic novels or superheros as a child but they are great resources to incorporate into a classroom library. They do come in a array of subject matter and can even be used... more

I agree that attitude plays a big part in success. It seems like if the students want to do something, even if it is a challenge for them, that they find a way to become successful with it. I'm... more
