I agree with you on how our struggling readers really have a hard time with comprehension when they can't decode the words. I was very surprised when I started with my lower level students and they couldn't recognize the short vowel patterns. They have progressed tremendously though.

The Word Build program introduces students to an affix and then they build onto that word with other words. Once they do this, they are learning pollysyllabic words. Throughout the entire week we observed our students on the different activities and how well they understood the words and on the last day of the weekly activities they complete the comprehension check. This allows us to see if they really understand the words they are learning. This has turned out to be really great, especially for the middle and higher students because they are working with more complex words that they are likely to see on their EOG.

        That's great that your students are making progress! I like that the affixes are really studied per week. That gives them plenty of exposure and are more likely to internalize them... more
