The feature points from Words Their way, The Primary Spelling Inventory Feature Guide, come from what the children successfully represented in the word that was called out to them. So for the word cat, they would get a point for each spelling feature that they correctly spelled ( 1 pt for beginning consonant, 1 pt for the short vowel a, and 1 pt for the ending consonant t). In a word like hope, they would get one point for beginning consonant, one point for ending consonant , and one point for the long vowel pattern o- e. On our Wiki page we uploaded this scoring guide, if you want to look at how the other words would be scored based on how the children spell certain words/patterns. I loved how children that hadn’t been “taught” certain words, learned them by being exposed to the words and sorting them by their pattern. I think that is “proof in the pudding” so to speak.
