The easiest part is the program provides you with all most everything you need, right at your fingertips. It gives the scoring guide to go by in order to put students into their appropriate group, gives you their word sort for the week, weekly spelling test- even provides you with an appendix that provides you with even more words that fit their weekly spelling pattern, etc. The hardest part is the management of it. 20 students, 6 groups, and only 2 adults! However, it’s only 10-15 minutes every day and that goes by pretty quick. I have 14 students that I see every day and my assistant takes the other 6. It works out well that way and I also try to see her 6 briefly, just to check in. I think that with anything it takes time to wrap your head around and you have to be prepared and with it- in order for it to work you have to have everything ready and they do the rest. But we are educators, we have mastered being “with it.”

Word sorts in the way ASU will teach you to implement are exactly as Jennifer describes. It needs to be implemented in that way if you subscribe to the notion of mastery and a developmental sequence... more
