Word sorts--an alternative

Word sorts in the way ASU will teach you to implement are exactly as Jennifer describes. It needs to be implemented in that way if you subscribe to the notion of mastery and a developmental sequence of word learning. An alternative, based on the notion that students need to learn to compare and contrast rather than master every letter sound, is the making words approach of Patricia Cunningham at Wake Forest. Neither method is THE solution. Both work. What you need to consider is what you and your students give up in other areas of learning and gain in learning to read/spell by using any approach.
