Rob Tierney did an interesting comp study with figures of characters, including one for the kid retelling the story. The kids would manipulate the characters and themselves (to show where they were viewing the scene or participating in it). Makes sense to me that figures or puppet characters would be supportive of young children's processing abstract info such as story elements...
