It's really interesting the success so many of you report when you give students some control over their own learning. I went to grad school with a guy who taught 3rd grade in Durham. Every second grader wanted to be in his class because (1) he had a 4-legged bathtub they got to read in and (2) every class got to name it on the first day of school each year. He had those kids in the palm of his hand even before school began.

    Again-anything is better when it is shared! As for writing-I usually have an "Author's Chair" which they can read from a book or read their own writing. They love it! They decorate it, too! I usually ... more

        Students love any classroom where they are able to still be kids. Teachers who allow students the opportunity to explore and relax will have students that are always eager to learn more.

        It never ceases to amaze me how giving the students even just the smallest bit of control,leads to so much success!
