Before we began this project the Media Center assistant and I both talked with the students about using the 5 word rule for picking a book. Turn to any page and begin reading. If you count five words you don't know on the page then you need to maybe find another book. I'm not sure how many of the kids used it when picking, but I had some heterogeneous reading ability groups which made it easier because they would either pick another book or help their partner read it. Many of my parents claim to not have computer access at home so I am not sure if digital media is even used in the homes.

      That is an interesting point about digital media. I am not sure I like gadgets such as Kindle because I really like just reading a good book, flipping through actual pages, etc. but I know some... more
