dividing class

I agree and disagree a little- I first had some book clubs based off of only interest...and the discussion at the 5th grade level was not what it should have been, and I had a lot of misbehaving. Once I was able to have female and male only book clubs and within those groups they selected their book of interest, I was getting much better feedback and discussion from the students. They were more engaged and enjoying the book for the part of just being comfortable and around others they were similar to them with their understanding the "girl" way or the "boy" way. My students prefer it to be gender based, and I did give them the choice to go by just interest, but they all said no way- haha.

That would be a really interesting experience! I think in some ways it is helpful to have the gender differences. Boys and girls learn in different ways so sometimes they teach each other a strategy... more

I think I would LOVE the chance to teach just a classroom of girls! That would be such an enlightening experience!
