fluency in kindergarten

I wouldn't have thought they focused on fluency in kindergarten. I even questioned myself a little about it with my lowest students because one of them is only a level above the end of kindergarten. I would think it would be difficult or impossible for a child to be fluent that early because they are just learning to read. They are still at the point of focusing on the words and really concentrating on what they are reading. Don't they need to have a little more under their belt before worrying about if they are fluent? That makes me question some of the things we are made/asked to do in education and at the level we are asked to do them. I don't know a lot about kindergarten or really anything at all. I would just think they would have to know lots of sight words , vocabulary, and comprehend well before being fluent. I could have it in the wrong order or I may be thinking wrong and correct me if I am.

Sometimes I wonder just as a side note if some children are as behind as we think they are or as we just asking them to do something that is not appropriate for their developmental stage or age. ( I think that is how I should word this)
I know I have students who are very behind but I have some who are considered behind but when I think back about myself in 2nd grade I probably didn't do more than some of those kids do. Some how I managed to make it out and do okay. I don't know do we push things to soon sometimes?

I think we do push students too hard sometimes. I think about how many levels and abilities there are at each grade level. It makes it nearly impossible to reach every child. It seems like there has... more
