For the Boyle paper I have chosen to write a compare and contrast paper. I chose this because I found it easier for my to write about and convey what I know about the stories. I think that a compare and contrast story also shows more about the stories themselves. There were a couple different stories that I thought about writing about but the ones that I chose for my paper were On for the Long Haul and The Human Fly. I found both of these stories interesting because of what the characters did and the lengths that they went to get there. In On for the Long Haul the irony of the story was the most interesting thing to me and in The Human Fly I thought that the ways in which the main character, Zoltan, decided he wanted to become famous was the most interesting. In my paper I plan to write about a few different aspects of the stories. The Human Fly and On for the Long Haul have both similarities and differences. They are similar in the way that both of the stories eventually lead to the main characters dying, Granted they die in different ways but they die. Also in both of the stories the characters are obsessed with something and go crazy trying to fulfill their obsessions. These were the main aspects I wanted to compare and elaborate on them. The differences in the stories are Bayard Wemp in On for the Long Haul was a total wimp and decided to uproot his whole family and move them to a safe house that he pays $500,000 for because he was paranoid about the world and was all about survival. On the other hand we have The Human Fly where Zoltan is a crazy guy who will do anything to become famous and pulls crazy stunts like hanging off a building for two weeks and flying on the wing of a jet plane. He is not really about survival at all; he almost seems to have a wish for death. We can conclude this from what is said about his appearance and his life. He is an emaciated man that wears a tattered costume and an old, faded bio-hazard bag as a cape. These are the differences I plan to write about and elaborate on in my paper. Through both of these stories I feel as if Boyle is trying to say you can do all that you want to try and stay safe or die but there is a plan for you and you can spend your life trying to live a certain way or you can just roll with the punches. He also hints not being obsessed with something to a point and let it take you over like it did for Bayard Wemp and Zoltan in these stories.
