Already moving ahead of the game I had my Boyle paper already written since Wednesday (19th). The prompt that I have chosen was the second one, choosing a theme that is repeated what the author wants to get across to the reader. Choosing this was not very easy, but after I understand what I wanted to do and more of what Boyle was saying I was able to get my act together and got the paper done. Before class on Friday though I had chosen the theme as violence, which would be more of a motif, but I was corrected on Friday with the idea of animal cruelty as a better theme. The major part of the paper that needs to be changed is just that, the parts where I mention violence needs to change to animal cruelty.
The stories that I choose to do this through is “Carnal Knowledge” and “Big Game”, automatically kind of making the paper a compare/contrast and theme. I plan to write about how Alena is overly obsessed with helping the animals, but in the end she actually hurts them more than they would have been hurt prior to her interfering. Also, I sort of added how she is violent towards humans that are the ones causing the harm to animals through threats, defacing private property, and destroying their records.
For “Big Game” I wanted to talk about how Bernard and Mike are complete idiots and jerks towards animals. Bernard’s torture of animals through not feeding them and allowing people to come in and kill them only for decoration and not for food is a huge example of animal cruelty. In the end when Bessie Bee squishes the two men and Mikes wife into the dirt I felt, like many other readers, happy about their deaths. I believe that Boyle was trying to get that feeling out of the reader by making the characters unbearable.
Through the two stories I want to explain, in the paper, how Boyle wants the reader to see that he believes that animals shouldn’t be killed just for their skins, but that he disagrees with the other protective type like Alena. He believes that animals can be used for food and such, but not killed just for the enjoyment of it or for decoration. He wants the reader to feel happy for the deaths in “Big Game”, and like Alena in “Carnal Knowledge” is a complete idiot for the things she does to “save” animals, when it actually harms them more.
