For our next paper I have decided to go with the compare and contrast paper. The two stories I have chosen “The Human Fly” and “On for the Long Haul.” As we read in class “The Human Fly”, the story talks about a man that wants to get famous by doing dare devilish thing like climb on a twenty two story building for two weeks. As a result of trying to prove himself to the world, he dies in his last stunt. Trying to jump twenty six full sized trucks, bumper to bumper; while on a motorcycle. He misses on the very last truck and ends up dying. While “On for the Long Haul” we have a father that is going overboard with thinking that the world is going to end any day now, because of a nuclear war. Then if there were any survivors, they will kill anyone to get some kind of food. So he goes and buys a half a million dollar house, that supplied all the food and tools they needed to survive; that will barely fit him, his wife, and two daughters. As they live there with a huge piece of land, the husband and wife are getting along well with the new environment that they are living with, but as for the daughters, they were becoming depressed. So once a month they would all go to the city and have a dinner and movie. One day the husband saw the man that sold him the house with another man, one of the girls accidently spilt her ice cream on the man and started beating her. A few months later that same man came to kill their family.
After look at all of this I have noticed some symbolism in both stories, for example the buzzard in “The Human Fly”, I think represented the agent picking up ‘food’ off of the dead which in this case was Zoltan. The agent became very popular after Zoltan’s death. In “On for the Long Haul” the two rabbits they got for the daughters were killed by the mysterious man, representing as what might later happen to the two daughters.
