I have not yet decided on what stories I am going to choose for the Boyle paper. I have chosen to do a compare and contrast paper though. I feel the compare and contrast paper, when written correctly shows a much deeper understanding of what Boyle wants to depict as an author. I would like to read one maybe two of the other stories mentioned in class before I make up my mind. Yet, I am leaning toward picking On For The Long Haul and The Human Fly. With these two stories I would have a couple topics to compare. I would talk about how the agents see people as a tool for income. I could then talk about each main characters goal and how determined they were to fulfill it. In contrast I would touch on how Zolton wanted this for himself, while Wemp was psyched out into his decisions. I could speak on how the agent at one point felt as though his client was a person not a money making took. While Arkson was only worried about cash from the get go. On the other hand I might choose to talk about animal right, the environment, and a bit of affection using The Big Game and Carnal Knowledge. I would talk about how Boyle shows two extremes on the spectrum of animal rights. Then I would talk about how the beautiful female in both stories blinds the main characters mental state at one point. With contrast, I would show how Puff was only in it for the money while Jim wanted sex. With On For The Long Haul and The Human Fly I think Boyle is trying to convey that people are used for money. It is just an aspect of life. It is not moral and Boyle tries to make his readers not like the agents in his stories. With The Big Game and Carnal Knowledge I believe Boyle is trying to convey that as humans we should look out for animals but not go over the top with it. We know the difference between right and wrong yet sometimes get clouded. I have begun to think about my paper and the direction I want to go in. I haven’t settled everything yet, still deciding.
