I have not yet decided whether I will write a theme paper or a compare and contrast paper yet. I am still looking over the stories we have read trying to weigh my options. I want to choose a good theme that interests me the most before I make my final decision on what I will write about. I am leaning more toward a compare and contrast paper because I feel it will be more productive of quality writing. I like to pick the similarities and differences of stories because it feels easier to me.
I am swayed to compare and contrast Big Game and Carnal Knowledge. On the issue of animal rights these two stories are completely different ends of the spectrum. In the story Carnal Knowledge the main characters were in the struggle to protect animals. They went through protests for animal rights and even went to liberate some turkeys off a turkey farm. Though their intentions were in the best interest of the animals their actions were foolish and did not make any progress in the fight for animal rights. They would destroy records for animal testing and not really think that the animals would only be subject to testing again because of their actions.
In the story Big Game, opposes the perspective of Carnal Knowledge. In the story, Bernard Puff ran a safari stating that any animal could be killed for a price. His animals were old and tired so they were not much of a target as they would not put up much opposition. He allowed animals to be killed and did not feed them or take care of them, stripping them of their rights. Though any animal could be killed, it depended on the hunter to determine how much of a threat the animal posed. Mike Bender was not much of a hunter and it resulted in his death. He was foolish and did not know what he was doing hunting animals.
Through these stories I feel Boyle wants us to feel as if those who are extremists for a cause are the ones who harm the cause and themselves the most. Alena did not do anything beneficial for the animals and Bernard Puff brought himself to his own demise through mistreatment of the animals. Boyle does not want us to feel sorry for them but rather dislike them for their actions in their respective stories.
