For the Boyle paper, I have decided to write a compare and contrast paper. I decided against writing a theme paper because it is sometimes difficult for me to pick out the themes in stories and write about them. It is much easier for me to look at how two stories are alike and different. The two stories that I plan to compare and contrast are "Big Game" and "Carnal Knowledge". There are a few similarities between the two stories because they both focus on animal rights, but there are also many differences. While both stories focus on animal rights, they are from completely different points of view. In "Big Game", the story illustrates how animals shouldn't be hunted for entertainment, and all of the characters that participate in the animal hunting end up being trampled by an old and beat up elephant. In fact, the only character in the story that doesn’t get trampled to death is a young girl that hates the idea of hunting the animals for sport. In "Carnal Knowledge", the story gives us characters that believe that eating meat in the first place is immoral. In the story, a depressed man named Jim, who has nothing against eating meat, runs into a vegan woman named Alena. Alena is gorgeous, but also a bit crazy. Her beauty convinces Jim to help Alena with some of her illegal and ridiculously stupid pro-animal rights activities. In the stories, I think T.C. Boyle is trying to show us his views on animal rights. In “Big Game” it is pretty obvious that the hunting of the exotic animals for sport is portrayed in a very bad light. Thus, I can assume that he was against such activities. In “Carnal Knowledge” however, the idea of being a vegan is kind of made fun of. The main vegan in the story, Alena, is portrayed as a bit of a fool. She never really has an organized plan for anything that she is doing. This is perfectly shown when she sets the turkeys free. While she had good intentions, when the turkeys were set free they were just ran over by vehicles in the street shortly after.
