I couldn’t help but smile as I was watching Jake’s videos. The progress he made over time is awesome. We just need to give the students resources to learn and they will run with it and become amazing writers.

I have done a lot of reflecting this week on how I teach writing now and in the past. I realize that I need to change the way I teach writing. I have gone back and forth with the students picking their own topics, but I have always gone back to me giving them the genre or giving them a prompt. Also, I have never really gave them an audience to write for. Like a lot of systems, our writing is included in our reading series. And I am not impressed with the writing they want the kids to do. Someone said that they have their class write a class newsletter and I am going to try that this week. I am giving them a real audience to write to (their classmates) and let them pick what they want to write in the newsletter. I am excited about it and I hope my class will be too.

I agree that he showed so much progress. I would also like to see where he is now in his progress.
