I too found it amazing for Jake and his family to finally be able to communicate. I could not imagine myself being able to try to tell others something and have no one understand what you need. And yes, we do and must have alternative ways for students to communicate and get ideas across. I also teach Kindergarten and understand that they are all at different levels and have different abilities- one of mine has trouble holding a pencil so we are trying alternative methods to see what best works for him. Have you tried a stetro or a cotton ball- sometimes they work sometimes not but a little girl I had last year loved the cotton ball and called it her bunny tail that she held for good luck. Many other kids wanted to have a bunny tail to help them as well!
