When I taught pre-k I had children in my class who were on the autism spectrum. I also have a good friend whose son shows many of the same characteristics of Connor in the one article. I was not teaching the children in my pre-k to actually read- but when we would discuss a topic or read a story- their focus would be driven in the direction of what they wanted to talk about. My friend's son is fascinated with the globe and weather. He can tell you the population of small cities in Japan! He is amazing... but if you were to try and talk about something in a story in which he had little interest- it is very difficult for him to think back and reflect. We are seeing many more students today that fall somewhere on the autism spectrum- and I really feel as though many teachers are so unaware of how to help these students to learn. I liked the part in the article that said... "Teachers need to understand how these theories potentially explain the cognition of students with ASD and use this understanding to create lessons that have promise in promoting increased reading comprehension for students across the spectrum." I also could relate to when Connor had a difficult time showing feelings and emotions for his friend when he lost his grandmother. In my experience, I have watched so many children with autism show very little- or no emotion for others. There were no hugs or "I love you" said to mom or dad, blank stares if another child was hurt or crying. It is intersting to read where Connor's mind was as his friend discussed being away because of his grandmother's death. I also liked the idea of setting a purpose for reading. I think all children could benefit from this... I know I could at times! Great article!

You said it, Katie! Setting a "purpose for reading" makes sense for kids- especially those with ASD or who have characteristics of "the spectrum." I also liked reading about how his teacher was able... more

I can't imagine how hard it would be, as a parent, to deal with your child having these issues. I know that you would accept the situation and do the very best that you could, but my heart just... more
