Healthy Homemade Dog Treats

• 1 Medium ripe banana
• 1 cup shredded carrots
• Ό cup unsweetened applesauce
• 1/8 – Ό cup water (start with an 1/8 and add as desired / needed)
• 1½ cups whole wheat flour
• 1 cup rolled oats (oatmeal)
• Oven set to 350 degrees

Mash Banana in small sized bowl and mix in grated carrots and add water and applesauce. In a medium bowl whisk together flour and oats into mashed banana.

Make a well in the center of flour oat mixture and pour in the carrot mix. Stir completely, comb / knead the dough. Make small ½” by 3” rolls and place on cookie sheet(s)

Cook for 25 minutes in oven at 350 and then let cool. Cut each finger sized treat into 3 to 4 bite sized treats and refrigerate a two week supply and if you have more, then freeze those and take out as needed. They defrost very quickly in refrigerator

Why Not Store Treats?

People always ask us about treats. As pups I recommend using the puppy food as rewards and I do believe that food as a reward for proper behavior is OK as long as we don’t fatten up our pets on treats. Store treats like milk bones are very fattening. Each one is like us having a desert!

So when you stop using puppy food, and puppy food as a treat, then a healthy substitute is what we call for and our dogs love the above treat. Lori make it and I think the above recipe makes a couple weeks worth plus or minus but we have two and sometimes more adult dogs here. I would make the above amount and freeze some and keep the other in a container in the refrigerator. YOUR DOG WILL LOVE THESE HEALTHY TREATS

We still use the Costco Kirkland brand made by Diamond for our dog. He had both the puppy brand and now the adult brand and has never had a problem with either. You should post the treat recipes on... more
