Annotated Bibliography Topic

For my Annotated Bibliography I chose to research about cloning. I havenít one hundred per cent established what my exact topic is regarding cloning. I may focus on either the legality or morality of it, or I may decide to do a general study on the topic.

I chose this topic because it is very interesting to me. Iíve never written about it, but Iíve always wanted to. I know it is a controversial issue for many. Things like animal cloning, and the human genome project have stirred up quite a bit of talk. Iíve always heard people talking about the topic of cloning, but Iíve never felt informed enough to form a real opinion about it. That is why I chose this topic. I want to be able to figure out how I really feel about cloning for the sake of science.

I have several questions I want to answer for myself going into this assignment. First of all, I really donít know how far theyíve taken the cloning process so far, and I am eager to find out. I am also eager to see how far cloning will hopefully be able to go in the future. What are the end goals of researching cloning?

Now that I am writing this and starting to get my mind going about this topic, Iím realizing how amazing this technology could become, but also what a disaster it could lead to. Iím thinking of a movie called ďRepo: A Genetic Opera.Ē It is about a society that thrives on its members getting regular plastic surgery. Similarly, the process of cloning could eventually lead to a society where all types of body parts are grown in a lab, and people simply have to pay for whatever they want.

On one hand, it could mean that transplant lists in hospitals would be eliminated. There would be enough hearts, kidneys, and livers for anyone who wanted one. On the other hand, it is very probable that hundreds of years from now, a pop star like Katy Perry could build an industry on having her facial features cloned, mass produced, and sold to her fans.

This concept sounds ludicrous and immoral now, but as the technology becomes more developed and more available, I have no doubt that eventually a society like this would be possible.

So I guess my question is this: Is it worse to live in a society where people are dying from lack of essential organs, or a society where everyone is simply a copy of each other? Iíll be very interested to become informed and formulate an opinion on the subject!
