This semester as we have been reading though TC Boyle’s stories I have enjoyed Green Hell the most out of all the stories we have read thus far. The reason being is because with Green Hell. The story is about a group of men stuck on an island and how hilarious their view of making a society in order to survive is. As stated in class I also believe that the professor and the mime were the funniest characters in the story. The professor with his Norwegian couldn’t really read the mood of the entire group and saying random things. Also the mime is hilarious because he is stuck writing the constitution for the group. Yes, writing a constitution for a group that is stranded in the amazon rain forest. That hardly makes sense! And then the fact that the narrator only survived by agreeing with the catman that his cats were cool, (even if he was just agreeing for the sake of agreeing). But that was why I enjoyed Green Hell, I however didn’t enjoy the story about the dog and his boy because it was very boring in my opinion. Even though that it was making fun of the dog for its “undying loyalty” or whatnot, It just didn’t sit right with me. First I know that it was silly because the dog was saving the boy’s life through methods that a normal dog wouldn’t be able to do at a moments notice. Or maybe the fact that the parents could understand what the dog was saying, because you cant. I think another reason that I didn’t like it was because it was making fun of the dog in a way and because of that I didn’t like it since I am an animal lover. Plus the fact that Timmy is just so prone to danger that he shouldn’t be able to exist on the earth anymore. He should have died several times over. But that is the reason why I don’t like that story out of TC Boyle’s short stories. Boyle is different from other material I have read in a way that it has a more, cynical view, in a way compared to other material I’ve read. But that’s what makes me enjoy most of the stories.
