Out of the TC Boyle stories I have read this semester “Green Hell,” was my favorite by a landslide. I love Gilligan’s Island so I thought it was like a more up to date version of that. I liked all the quirky characters and how he described them all so vividly. I also enjoyed the narrator’s outlook on all the other passengers, he was so annoyed the whole time but it was so funny. I also liked the twist at the end with “cat man,” becoming the tribes demi-god. Everything from the mime to the constitution was hilarious to me about Green Hell. I hated the Lassie spin off story. I read it alone and interpreted it completely different from how it was supposed to be interpreted. His use of satire went completely over my head and I realized it was a completely different story once it was read in class. It just was not my kind of story, I was not even the least bit interested in Timmy being stupid and his dog having to save him every other second. I was just so oblivious the first time I read the story and the second time I couldn’t get into the story enough to realize what was going on. Overall I really enjoy the TC Boyle stories, I think he is a great creative writer and I love his vivid details in all of the stories. I had never read stories like these before in class I think because these are funny and definitely a good book for a college English class. The humor is a lot more mature than I am used to reading in class and I like that I feel like I’m not reading the same stories I have been over and over again. Even though I did not like the Lassie story once it was read in class I did think it was at least funny. The stories are very interesting and I enjoy reading all of them because they are so different than stories I have read in other classes. I look forward to reading the next one!
