For the upcoming issue paper, I was hoping to explore whether or not technology is really progress. However, I am worried that I wonít find anything but opinions in reference to this subject, especially on the stance that not all technology is progress. Because of this, I will probably have to go with one of the more clichť topics like abortion or stem cell research. I attended a Christian high school, so I am very familiar with writing papers that are completely against abortion. If we dared to show any support for abortion, you were swiftly sent to the bible teacher and told how you were going to hell if you actually thought this (so apparently Iím going to hell, yay).
It is for this reason that I think the subject of abortion will be a good topic for me, because I have already been taught the reasons why abortion is the wrong choice. I am looking forward to arguing why abortion can be the right choice without fear of getting lectured for thinking. The other reason that I am considering this topic is simply because I am interested in learning about the pros and cons of abortion from the scientific standpoint.
I feel that the two sides of the topic will be vastly different, oneís viewpoint will come from a very religious stance and the other will be from a very scientific stance. From the religious side, I expect to see a lot of bible verses, talking points on how to change someoneís opinion on abortion, and various spiritual reasons that deter people from agreeing with a womanís right to choose. From the scientific stance, I expect to see the argument that the fertilized egg is not a person, and in the first 3 months it is a parasite rather than a fetus. While I am not personally a big fan of abortion, I do recognize the fact that it will not become illegal anytime soon and that people have a right to choose what to do with their body. With my paper I hope to succeed in presenting unbiased information from both viewpoints.
