Issue Paper

For my issue paper I am considering focusing on the arguments based on the second amendment, the right to bear arms. The issue over this amendment has been around for quite sometime and there are very strong and conflicting arguments on both sides. I personally chose this topic because I feel that it is important that we know about both sides of the story especially when topics arise concerning our civil right. I was raised in the country and have shot guns and bows ever since I was big enough to hold them. The same goes for my whole family. I use my gun to hunt during deer season not to go kill people so this subject is personal to me. I feel a lot of people feel the same as I do but I also know that there are a substantial number of individuals who do not see things quite the same way. Since these opinions are so different it will be easy to determine clear sides and views on the topic. The two sides of the arguments I believe will be very clear. On one side are the people who believe that they should be allowed to own and carry weapons, whether it is for hunting or recreational activities such as target shooting. I know many women also like to carry a pistol if they are traveling alone at night for protection. Those in favor of owning firearms will see taking away the right as robbing them of there freedoms allowed by the Constitution. They also believe that it is not the guns that are dangerous because a loaded gun can be laid on a table all day long and it will not injure a soul until a person comes up and pulls the trigger. On the other side of things are those who disagree with the amendment and believe that gun laws should be made stricter. These people argue that guns are dangerous and if they were removed the crime and mortality rates would go down. They believe that taxes and higher regulations on gun purchasing should be created to help keep the public safe. Overall I think this is going to be a very good topic for my issue paper.
