For my issue paper I am going to write about the debate between full inclusion of children with special needs and self-contained classes and schools. I am a special education major and this is a big debate in my future field. I am interested to see what exactly each side has to say and what evidence they have to support their claims. There are many different opinions on this topic but the main debate is if children with special needs should be fully included or in segregated classes. Many teachers and researchers feel that including kids with special needs in the regular classroom helps build social skills. They feel that inclusion benefits kids with and without disabilities. Supporters of inclusion say that interacting helps kids with special needs see proper social behaviors. Children without special needs benefit because in the real world is inclusive and one day they will have to interact with people with special needs. It also teaches respect. Other professionals feel that children with special needs need much different instruction from specialized teachers. Supporters of segregated settings say that children with and without disabilities will not benefit. Children with special needs are often bullied by their typical peers and need direct small group instruction that general education teachers cannot give them. Children with disabilities often have behavioral problems and act out and disturb class; if the teacher has to deal with these problems that will take away from other studentís instruction. As a future teacher in the adapted curriculum I lean more towards the self-contained side only because the children I will be working with will be severely impaired and will not be able to function in a regular class. I would like to see the research and what professionals are saying about why inclusion is so much better so I have the information I need to make an educated stance on one side or the other later in my career.
As far as problems go I donít think I will have too many. I have already done the research for my annotated bibliography so I am half way done. The only problem I see is making sure I argue each side equally. I also think I will have a small problem with the fact that there are a lot of different sides because some think students should go half and half but I want to just show the two extremes.
