Out of all the TC Boyle stories we have read so far, my favorite was “Green Hell”. It reminded me of Gilligan’s Island, which was one of my favorite shows growing up. The way the story is told is so different from any other story I have read. To be in such a horrible situation, the narrator seems completely at ease with everything. He tells the story as if nothing in the world is wrong, when in all honesty he is in one of the worst predicaments possible. The array of different characters made the story all the more interesting and hilarious to read. From the mime to the crazy cat guy, this story was nothing less than entertaining. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions the narrator provided that made me feel like I was along side him in the jungle. I love stories that take me into the setting; it makes them fun to read and keeps you asking for more. My least favorite story so far has been “Heart of a Champion”. The story was based off of the show “Lassie” and it really killed any interest I ever had in the show. Everything in the story was so far-fetched that it was almost too unrealistic. I also can’t picture a normal dog doing any of the things Lassie did. I found myself getting irritated with how helpless the little boy was! The part of the story where Lassie and the coyote “hooked up” just seemed to go a little too for me. Also, the mouth-to-mouth Lassie performed on Timmy was just hilarious. I honestly have not hated any of the stories we have read, but “Heart of a Champion” has been my least favorite. For the most part I have enjoyed reading almost all of the stories we have been assigned so far. My English 1100 teacher did not require us to read any stories, but we read multiple stories a week in high school English. The TC Boyles stories are a thousand times better than any stories I read in high school. I dreaded reading them in high school, but now I actually enjoy them. Boyles’ stories are much more entertaining and aren’t informative, boring readings like most I read in high school. They’re also much shorter in length, which I don’t mind at all!
