I typically enjoy the stories that our class has been assigned to read from the TC Boyle book. The first story we read was one of my all-time favorites from this book, the one about the African game ranch. That story had very vivid descriptions, which made it easy to visualize in my mind. Since I am a visually oriented person, I tend to gravitate more towards books and stories with a lot of detail in them. It makes whatever I am reading easier to understand and therefore, more enjoyable. The story was also pretty funny and entertaining, with a kind of naughty humor that I look for when I am reading books for pleasure. Another story I enjoyed reading from TC Boyle’s book was the one about Lassie and Timmy. Again, this story had some twisted humor in it that I loved. It was just entertaining to read and as with most of the stories we have been assigned from this book, it feels more like pleasure reading than an assignment. The story I did not really enjoy at all was the one titled “Modern Love”. I did not really care for this story because it was just boring to me, and the giant body condom suit thing was weird. Other than that I do enjoy reading these short stories. I also like them because they are short stories and not novels, so they are not as intimidating to read.
Boyle stories differ from the material I have read in past English classes because typically in high school, instead of being assigned short stories, we were assigned novels. I would much rather read a short story than a novel for the obvious reasons of length and time it takes to read. Also, these novels were pretty much all “classics”, and frankly, I find them to be boring and difficult to relate to and therefore enjoy. I like Boyle’s stories because I feel like the wording is more modern and up-to-date with the current times. The jokes are also funny and easy to relate to and pretty much none of what I had to read in previous English classes had much humor in them.
