The topic that I am currently considering writing about in the issue paper is the issue of mass media’s influence on the youth in America today. I have been considering this topic mainly because as a college student, myself and all of my peers are all influenced by what’s in the media, and we can all relate to the topic. Magazine articles, social networking sites, reality television shows, the news, sports programs, the radio, and many other sources of mass media have a huge impact on what the youth today think they should be doing with their lives. I want to learn about the detrimental aspects of the media, and if there is any, possibly the good side of mass media productions on today’s youth. The obvious side to the argument would be the one that is mostly represented today, which argues that the mass media is not good for our youth. Usually this is argued because of the way the media represents what people ‘should’ be like. For example, many of today’s popular reality shows depict young people binge drinking and randomly hooking up with strangers. Others show people getting into street fights and gang activity. These kinds of shows are the ones that most kids my age typically would watch and like. Does watching this kind of show make you want to be like the people in them? And if so how would that impact the behavior of our youth? These would be questions I will address in that side of the paper. The less obvious side to this issue would be that the media can actually have a good influence on today’s youth. For example, the news can help today’s youth be more interested in world affairs and watching political speeches would possibly get interested in political issues. Or the Olympics could push teens to be more motivated to be involved in sports and setting long term goals. I will research statistics on both sides of this issue to back each side up with facts. I will also try to evenly explain both sides of the issue without being biased to one.
