The topic I have settled decided to pursue for this issue paper is whether or not a Deaf child should be mainstreamed in the public school system. There are many pros and cons to this situation, but it is a very difficult decision to make when you are the one in the situation. During high school for my foreign language I took American Sign Language. I learned all about the language along with the Deaf Culture. The culture aspect is very important to the Deaf and that will be a big thing I focus on in the paper. If a child is born deaf to two hearing parents, these parents could be unaware of this aspect and ignore it when it should be taken into great consideration before making a decision on this type of situation. The “for” side and the “against” side should be examined for this issue.
The side for mainstreaming will look at the reasons why someone would choose to put their deaf child in to a public school. They would interact with hearing children all the time and build peer groups of a different culture at a young age. They would learn to appreciate people who are different than them and learn to communicate with them. This would pay off in the long run because there would not be such a large language and culture barrier between this deaf child and the hearing world, and that could lead to job opportunities and other things of that nature. The child would also be integrating their culture into the class room and be giving the hearing children insight into a different world.
The side against mainstreaming would focus on the culture aspect and argue that this child would lose his or her connections with the Deaf Culture. One would argue that they are trying to turn away from said Culture. This student also would need an interpreter for the teacher so he or she could learn affectively, and that could be a difficult distraction for the other students as well as the teacher. Also the other students might not be as accepting as one would hope and this child could be excluded.
The greatest challenge of this paper will be staying neutral. I do not want to sound bias toward one side of the issue or the other.
