I have finally settled on the topic of the Patriot Act and its reform for the issue in this paper. The Patriot Act is a very controversial piece of legislation that basically allows the United States government to have less restraint on anti-terrorism actions such as detainment of suspected, non-citizen terrorists as well as spying and tapping of citizen communication involving key words or phrases about terrorism. On one side of the argument are those who initiated this reform after the attacks of September 11th in hopes of granting more power to the organizations that are meant to deter and anticipate events such as that. In the shaky aftermath of the tragic attacks, politicians and lobbyists wrote a rough bill that detailed what they believed needed to be done to prevent future attacks and the law was quickly signed into power. This side wants to protect the American people from outside threats by peeking into their personal lives to make sure there are not hidden agendas that are being hidden from the political sector. On the other side of the argument are those who argue about their civil liberties being jeopardized as a cost to further intelligence granted to governmental agencies. This side is asking if it is so necessarily important to protect ourselves by giving up liberties we were granted much earlier. They wonder if the trade-off results in more freedom or less freedom for Americans. Each side would like to see reform of the bill in one way or another, whether to cement the powers given to the government through the Patriot Act or simply to do away with it and rely on other sources of intelligence to protect ourselves. The biggest challenge I believe that will arise with this issue, or any hot button issue presented today, will be my ability to present both sides of the argument equally and unbiased. While I may have an opinion that leans to one side, I must keep that separate and only work with the facts and try not to let my personal virtues hinder my capability to write as an informed writer.
