This English class has been different from others in my past because in the very beginning I was provided with a list of assignments that I would be given. This list never changed and provided more than enough information about what was required of me. The course syllabus helps, more than anything it allows students to see what is in store for their future in a class. The syllabus given in this class was straight forward and left nothing unexplained.
I feel the most beneficial part of this class has been the requirements for sources, primary sources, and the length of the papers. The lengths have been more than acceptable, never going over ten pages, for me never over seven. I enjoy that the papers are graded on a more difficult scale than Iím used to because it shows me exactly what I need to fix in the future, not what I can get away with. As far as instructing goes I feel that the ďtough loveĒ attitude went a long way in regards to helping all students. We were shown that things can be serious while at the same time quite hilarious and that itís ok to have adamant opinions on a subject. Class participation was fun because of this.
The only thing that I can think of as unbeneficial might be the discussion board. I enjoyed not having class one day a week and being able to complete the discussion board from my room, but it didnít really teach me anything. I do think there was a slight aspect of preparation for some papers but generally I always ended up typing words with no meaning, literally going off on tangents just to reach the word count. That was always kind of annoying to me, not seeing a purpose for the board, other than taking place of a class period. Even as much as I didnít appreciate the online work, I still enjoyed not having to go to class, and I guess it helped with my time management.
This class more than surpassed my expectations, teaching me how to research properly and express my opinions to a group of people like never before. Also I never would have written an essay about taking over the world while using alliteration, so thatís cool.
