4/20 Discussion

This English class had differed from the others because of the stories we analyzed and the discussions we had. The assigned papers were largely the same as any other class except the tone (of the assignment and the class) allowed for more mature and simple writing. There was an obvious no-nonsense attitude from Mr. Bates when it came to doing your work and meeting deadlines. I believe this method either make or breaks students. They either give up or they work to satisfy the instructor and meet said deadlines. I have benefited most from this, because I can now effectively write when I need to and it does not pose as a problem. I really enjoyed the informative paper and learning so much about the Freemasons. Doing research in general, which is what the class is about, is much easier than before. The in-class discussions have also helped me become more analytical when I read; not only stories but sources for my papers and any other document thatís meant to be credible. One part of the class that I did not like is the way the online journal works. It is my belief that since there is no face-to-face meeting then there is nothing to be on time for. Therefore the accepted journal period should go from the time it is posted till 11:59 that night. HTML code can be written to close the acceptance period automatically. That being said, the journals themselves helped me stay with the pace of the class for each paper. This class certainly met my expectations although I donít remember exactly what they were when we wrote them at the beginning of the semester. I have learned a lot about my personal writing style and that writing can be whatever you want it to be. Other classes have only taught about the restrictions and rules of writing. Additively, the Boyle book is something I plan on keeping for personal reading. His style of satirical/ sarcastic writing is entertaining and stirring at once, and the Ďhidden agendasí in his stories are fun to uncover.
