This English class has been different from others that I have taken in the past mostly because it was more entertaining, and that made me want to come to class more often. Other than that, I feel that this class was different because it was very straightforward. Everything that was expected in our papers was clearly and concisely spoken in class and written on the board. I feel that since I wrote down exactly what was written on the board, it helped my chances of succeeding in this class a lot. I benefitted the most from this class just by taking notes, because I can save them and use them for future papers I may have to write in college. The advice given such as using statistical evidence to be clearer and bring papers up to a college level writing status, or things like how to properly construct in-text citations can be used in any future college essay I will ever have to write. Learning the “do’s and don’ts” of writing also helped for obvious reasons of learning what I specifically should and should not do in a paper. I also benefitted from the in class discussions on the stories we read in Boyle’s book because it taught me how to “read between the lines” more effectively, and I feel that instead of just skimming the surface of a story, I can now find what the message the author was trying to portray is. In-class essays helped me get my thoughts in my head more organized on paper and so I think that improved my writing a bit as well, because that skill can be applied to any writing situation. I think my expectations at the beginning of the semester were, “wow, this class is going to be very difficult. I don’t even think this teacher will give my grade a chance. He probably just picks favorites.” After taking the class I realized as long as I came to class, took notes and followed instructions that I would be fine. I need ten more words and I’m done. Abby’s picture is cute.
