Based on what we have read of the Boyles stories so far, I can say that I enjoy reading these stories. All of his stories have a little twist that makes it different from other stories. I like how he uses strange people and odd scenarios in most of his short stories.
Out of all of the stories that we have read so far, my favorite would have to be “On For The Long Haul”. I like this story because the thought of an apocalypse and how people would react or prepare for it intrigues me. Even though an apocalypse did not happen in this story, it still shows what some people would have done to keep themselves safe. And I also admire the irony in this story, because Wemp moved out there to be away from everything and be safe but he ends up being killed anyways. And it is all his fault because he could have pulled his trigger and killed Cullum but he did not have the guts to.
On the other hand, my least favorite story from the Boyles stories, is probably “Carnal Knowledge”. This story did not appeal to me at all. I found it to be boring, slow, and uneventful. But the main reason I did not like it is because it was just weird. It was a very strange story with a very odd girl in it. She was very OCD and germaphobic. I just thought this was a strange story that was not very interesting to me. And he also portrayed the guy in the story as very desperate and lonely and willing to do anything. I just wasn’t fascinated.
Other than “Carnal Knowledge”, I have found all of Boyles stories to be rather interesting and amusing. I have never read much, but TC Boyles writes stories that I will read because they catch my attention in some way. Boyles is a great author and I look forward to reading more of his stories.
