T.C Boyle does an excellent job of portraying his views in his stories and he has some of the same views as I do. Like Boyle, I dislike arrogance and greed, I believe that obsessions are harmful, fame is overrated, and animals should have rights. I like how Boyle supports his views through a variety of stories instead of just one. This tactic helps Boyle prove and reinforce his ideas. I have not read any of the other stories in the T.C Boyle book other than the ones assigned in class but I am sure that his other stories are crafted similar to those that I have previously read.

Of the stories we read in class, I think that “Big Game” is my favorite. This story was intriguing because the Game Ranch, characters, and animals were all described in great detail. I enjoyed how Boyle gave a background story about the animals. I had so many mixed emotions when the terrible past of the animals were revealed. I was sad, disappointed, and downright pissed at times. These emotions, created by Boyle, made me extremely happy when Puff and the Benders died at the end of the story. I also enjoyed this story because the scenes occurred outdoors and I was amused at the idea of an idiotic and phony British man trying to create Africa in California.

My least favorite story was “Little Fur People.” As an ECU student, I naturally like squirrels but I did not enjoy how Boyle constructed this story. I felt that the conclusion of the story was poorly written. As I read through this story, I flipped to the last page expecting more information but the story just ended. I also don’t think that Boyle did a good job of developing the characters and events. This story left me slightly bored and uninterested because of its lack of action and detail. I thought that the idea of animals being hunted but could not be protected was interesting. This is a problem that society faces today. I appreciate Boyle for writing about this topic because I completely agree with him that states should not own animals. I just think he could have made the story more persuasive if he had constructed it differently.
