So far I have enjoyed how diverse each Boyle story we have read. Each story has similar characteristics depending on what section the story lies however the plots are completely different. Stories with different plots keep me interested in what Boyle has to say about each of the characters.
My favorite story has got to be “The Human Fly.” Even though Zoltan was such a tragic figure and I was upset he died in the end I enjoyed the whole story. I could recite each event throughout that story in detail. I don’t know why that is, probably something to do with Boyle’s description of each event. Boyle really makes an emphasis to the readers that Zoltan is unhealthy and is obsessed with fame. This automatically makes him the protagonist, and the antagonist to be the agent. Boyle throughout this story had his readers hate the agent because again and again the agent would profit as Zoltan got closer to death. I also liked this story because it was entertaining. Zoltan was always trying daring new things that are unheard of in today’s society for people to do. People today and with all of the health insurance are not permitted to strap themselves to the wings of jets and hang underneath tractor trailers. However, Boyle gives us a glimpse of these stunts through Zoltan’s obsession with fame.
My least favorite story has to be “Little Fur People.” I love animals and I thought this would be up there with my favorite; however, I was very disappointed. I thought the story lacked flow and there was no big event in my opinion. The woman’s neighbors called the authorities because she was keeping 32 squirrels as house pets. I think that is bazaar and obsessive. Then she attempted to get her daughter and her boyfriend involved to rescue the animals.
I have not read any other story in the Boyle books thus far.
