Boyle really knows how to write an interesting story. The stories we have read so far have been enjoyable on many different levels. The underlying tones of Boyle’s sense of humor combined with the events that happened in the story result in a great collection of tales. He knows the exact wording and timing in which to inject his opinion in the story. The whole book does a great job of pointing out the obvious flaws in humanity. His opinions on greed, insanity, paranoia and other unflattering behaviors that we all show almost every day come forward in the plots and endings of each story. The death section is an extremely thrilling section that adds enough of suspense to make anybody get into it regardless of personal views. It shows how blinding greed, arrogance, overconfidence, or paranoia all end badly. The love section does a great job of showing us that love is not a bad thing, but loving something or wanting something to the point of obsession can be our downfall. The stories are examples of how not to live by. My favorite story so far has been “The Big Game”. I love the suspense and action throughout the story. Boyle builds our hopes up and drops them back down; all to create an amazing ending to a thrilling story. The description of the setting is also what makes this story great. Every detail that is important is not left out. His description of the dismal “African Game Reserve,” really shows us how run down this place is. His description of the animals really gives us a feel of how pathetic the animals are. It makes us feel bad for them and their unfortunate situations. The occasional humor helps to emphasize his points and provides some comic relief. The story is great to me because it all seems like the plot of a perfectly written short film. My least favorite so far has been “Modern Love.” I just don’t feel as attracted to that love story. “Carnal Knowledge,” was a much better story. “Modern Love,” just isn’t very entertaining. It does a great job of showing off Boyle’s awesome sense of humor, but it fails as a gripping story. It almost doesn’t seem real that a guy could be desperate enough for sex that he would listen to a crazy woman with an exotic disease fetish just for sex. I have read no other stories than what I has been assigned, but I will no doubt keep book; and I have already recommended it to everyone I know that reads.
