Final Topic

The final topic for my argument paper is the ban on the manufacturing of automatic firearms and the restrictions on purchasing these firearms. I think that manufacturing these should be legal again and that purchasing them should have different regulations. Currently, no legal automatic firearms have been manufactured and registered since May 19th of 1986 because of the Hughes Amendment. You can legally purchase any automatic firearms made before that date as long as you pass a full background check. An opposing argument could be that it would increase crime rates. Studies show that countries with strict gun control have a higher rate of crime. As the saying goes ďif you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.Ē Another argument would be that novice shooters have a potential to harm themselves or others because of the continuous kickback. Something to prevent this would be my idea to make it a requirement to own a semi-automatic version of the firearm you want to purchase as an automatic for at least a year prior to acquiring the automatic model. This would give firearms users practice with handling the kickback of their particular rifle or handgun. Also when they go to get the automatic version, they should have to prove their proficiency with the semi-automatic version to show that they can handle what they are about to purchase. This will prevent them, when they go to full auto, from having the recoil cause them to lose control and harm others. Another way to make them safer is to offer them with select fire switches. These will allow a shooter to choose between semi-auto, burst fire (3 shots per trigger pull) and full-auto. These switches could be locked in place by a key so if someone is teaching another shooter how to shoot, they can lock the switch on semi-automatic as to keep others safe. These safety precautions should keep these firearms safe for people from inexperienced shooters, to the most experienced shooters, as well as the bystanders. I think that the second amendment right should be expressed as each person chooses to as long as the person has not been convicted and has proven to be a responsible person with the safety of others.
