Well, based on the stories we’ve read so far, Boyle is very strange. And by strange I mean a total psychopath. He is so strange and out there if he were to get abducted by aliens, I can’t help but think that somehow he’d end up probing them rather than the other way around. I digress; my favorite story has been “Heart of a Champion.” That was hilarious. I loved when Lassie operated a winch and cable, which was what signaled to me that Boyle was making fun of the Lassie series. Love it.

As far as my least favorite, sorry to say but it was “Modern Love.” I have a running theory about this. That story is out there strange, too strange to be a complete work of fiction. I’ve not done any research, and by research I mean a quick Wikipedia reference; someone told me that I wouldn’t make it through college without a solid basis of alcohol and Wikipedia. Check. I’m lying about the alcohol part, but no one needs to know that. Anyway, I know nothing about TC Boyle other than he’s a soulless ginger, courtesy of the picture provided in the book. So I’m thinking that “Modern Love” is based on a true story. A personal true story. Of his. I find it highly doubtful that he was Internet surfing in 1987, before the Internet was invented and made accessable for civilians, and just so happened to “stumble” across an article about Swedish full-body condoms. I’m pretty sure computers were still the size of walls back then too, and their main purpose was killing dinosaurs. Cause of death being blunt force trauma, naturally. So since he couldn’t Internet Surf, see the “Swedish Full Body Condom” Article, and decide to write a creepy story about it, one has to wonder if he actually dated and did a chick who required a full body condom, most require four expensive drinks or so. Oh wait, she did that too. So he’s desperate and a sucker. So just knowing that “Modern Love.” was based on a personal true story is just way too much information, and it makes him seem like a loser, or crazy. Probably both.

The story I would most like to read and discuss is “I Dated Jane Austin,” I read it and I don’t really understand it. But most of his stories are like that, and I feel kind of stupid for it because Boyle is a strange one, no doubt, but you can’t deny that he is an excellent writer and does an excellent job of telling his stories. I liked the Jane Austin one, and I’d like to know the meaning behind it, but I just can’t get it.
