My reaction to TC Boyle's stories so far has been about the same. TC Boyle writes stories that are very sarcastic in nature. His stories tend to contain over dramatic situations as well as over dramatized characters. Modern Love contained a woman whom was obsessed with germs. She was highly germaphobic and was also the editor of a magazine in which she featured a colomn about new diseases she had discovered. This character is a very exaggerated representation of a Germ-a-phob. The narrartor of the story keeps courting her and attempting to get into her pants. He gets very close but then at the end of the story she discovers that he worked with feet and she backs away from him and drops him completely. This is also another theme of Boyle's in which he has a desperate guy who will do anything for sex.
Another story we read was The Heart of a Champion. This story is an over dramatized yet sarcastic version of Lassie. The dog takes care of this boy whom is basically a walking magnant for death. She is constantly fighting off danger that the boy manages to get into. In about three pages the boy has been saved from at least five deadly situations. In the end of Heart of a Champion however, Lassie the dog meets a coyote and runs off to live her own life, abandoning the boy to fend for himself. It is implied at the end of the story that nature finally killed him off and he dies.
The story that I liked the most was probably Modern Love because the story has a happier ending compared to that of Heart of a Champion in which the boy character dies. In Modern Love the only sad part is that the narrator does not get to have sex with the woman he wants without a full body condom, and then she leaves him. He never really loved her though so he was not that torn up about it. All he wanted was sex. Heart of a Champion is sad because the animal watching over the boy abandons him and nature takes its course and finally gets to kill him. Also Lassie then turns on him and helps the Coyote eat his hand. So I did not like Heart of a Champion as much.
A story that we have not read in class that I would like to read is Carnal Knowledge. It is comparable to Modern Love because the main characters have a similar motive. They are lonely men who just want to have sex and the do not care that much about the girl.
