I have considered many topics for the issue paper but the one I most likely will end up doing is the issue of capital punishment or in other words the issue of the death penalty. This topic or issue is controversial because it can be looked at from a legal standpoint or from a moral standpoint. On one side of the argument people support the death penalty or capital punishment because 1. It decreases prison populations, 2. It gets rid of the more dangerous criminals from the population, 3. It saves tax payers money for not housing them. But on the other side of the spectrum people believe that giving a person life in prison is a worse punishment than just killing them because they have to live for the rest of their lives with the decisions they made instead of taking the easy way out. Some people also believe that it is just unmoral to kill someone because of their crimes, like they think that it is not their right to decide who lives and dies and that power should not be in their hands. They believe that death cannot be an equal punishment for someone who has killed a person. My topic or issue paper will mostly impact criminals since it is primarily about them but it could also impact tax payers as well as prisons in the United States of America. It could and does affect criminals because depending on the crime they commit they could be looking at going to electric chair instead of just chilling inside a 4 walled 1 peephole cell for the rest of their lives. It could affect tax payers because we could be paying more to house criminals and feed them and clothe them instead of saving money by ending some criminalís lives. It could affect prisons all around the United States of America because with criminals being sentenced with the death penalty criminal populations will start to decrease and we will not have a need to have so many prisons. This could lead to a deterrence from committing a crime.
