In previous english classes when reading chapters from a story or novel I found it most beneficial when my teacher went over what we had read in class. It helped give me a better understanding of what I had read and helped me make connections that I may not have made while reading. Also, I find that having open discussions with the class have been beneficial because it allows everyone to talk and ask questions. Another thing that I have found beneficial is when my past teachers have focused both on reading and writing and not just one more than the other. Also, I have found it to be very beneficial to me when my teachers have left constructive comments on my papers to let me know of the mistakes I made and things I need to improve on. This allows me the opportunity to learn why I received the grade I did and lets me know the things I need to correct so that I can earn a higher grade the next time. Lastly, when my teachers have office hours or available times for me to meet with them I have found this beneficial because this allows me to ask any questions that I may not have wanted to ask in class and gives me the chance to discuss what I can do to improve. Things I have not found beneficial from past english teachers is when they just stand upon front of the class and lecture the whole time or they focus on reading more than writing and vice versa. Also, when past teachers have graded my papers but left no comments for me to see what I did wrong or how I can make further changed to improve my grade. Based on these experiences I think the most beneficial thing for me this semester would be scheduling appointments to go over rough drafts of my papers and participating in open discussions with the class. Having an active classroom environment is positive for me because it helps me focus my attention on what is happening in class and not how much time is left before I can leave.
