After revising my final topic for my Annotated Bibliography several times I have finally settled on a topic. I will be writing and finding sources pertaining to the physical and psychological effects on children as a result of living in poverty. My sociology teacher a few weeks ago showed a video on children and families living in poverty. I became very interested in learning more about the topic after watching the video and having a class discussion on it. The testimonies and stories from the children themselves were very touching and empowered me to research more about children in the United States that are living in poverty. As a social worker advocating for children in foster care I will be taking children out of unhealthy family and home situations and I will be providing them with resources to help them cope and deal with the psychological and physical effects associated with growing up in poverty. I have decided to categorize my research findings into various categories in order to cover every aspect of my topic. I will be including information on physical effects, psychological effects, long term and short term effects of poverty, intervention programs, statistical information, home insecurity, and educational outcomes. I have mainly found scholarly articles to be most relevant to my topic. All the sources I have compiled have come from an online database called Academic Search Complete. As well as academic journals, I have also found governmental documents discussing census reports and governmental intervention programs. I have never written an Annotated Bibliography before so I am a little hesitant about how my first one is going to turn out. Composing all the information found in each article into a few brief sentences is going to be a challenge for me. Although, there are websites that teach you how to construct citations using MLA format and even organize and assemble the citation for you I am still doubtful that each of my fifteen citations will be one-hundred percent correct. To ease my worries I will be making a trip to the writing center after I have gathered together all the information I need and organized my paper. By getting a second opinion hopefully I will not stress as much and improve my grade slightly.
