The topic that I decided on for my issue paper is welfare drug testing. I chose this topic because I felt it had a good amount of points for each side of its argument. Clearly, one side of the argument is that the United States should not implement drug-testing requirements to receive welfare benefits, and the other side thinks that welfare drug testing should be implemented.
One main point in favor of drug testing for welfare is that drug testing will eliminate the amount of tax money that is gone to waste just to fuel someone’s drug addiction. It would help weed out the amounts of people that are just abusing the money they receive from welfare, and make sure welfare money goes to other people. Another point that favors this position is that people who do abuse drugs and do really need welfare money might have more incentive to quit their habit so that they can continue to collect their welfare. It might give people more of a reason to get themselves a little bit more together because if they really need the money, then they will be more likely to stop doing drugs.
A main argument for the side against welfare drug testing is that it is “unconstitutional” or unfair to those who receive welfare because it is placing a stereotype on them saying that people who receive welfare are more likely to be drug addicts. Those people believe that it is almost insulting to require the testing. Another strong point against welfare drug testing is that the money that would have to go into funding the drug testing is too expensive. Another argument is that drug testing can only rule out people abusing illicit drugs, but it can’t rule out people who spend their welfare money on alcohol, or cigarettes, or other unnecessary things that can also be abused.
Overall there are several points of arguments that can be debated on this subject. In the end, the people that are being mostly affected in this situation are people who receive welfare, but it also indirectly affects the taxpayers whose money goes into paying for welfare. This is a pretty big topic that affects a lot of people, so that’s one reason why I am interested in it.
